Ashutosh Bhardwaj employs meticulous geometric design elements to create unreal, abstract spaces. With a palette of bright, intense colors, Bhardwaj combines historical and contemporary imagery culled from various media sources in India to call attention to sociopolitical issues related to consumerism.

In Induced Epidemic, Bhardwaj critiqued the rise of the cosmetics industry, a by-product of the liberalization of the Indian economy in the early 1990s. Bhardwaj depicted several flailing arms desperately reaching for a product intended to reshape a person’s nose to resemble the one in the striking profile of the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti. For Bhardwaj, the crowd represents the desire for consumer goods and a homogenized standard of beauty. The curtains flanking the stage suggest that the activity is being controlled from behind the scenes by those in power.
